Great cod fishing in Norway

During two weeks in March 2012 a phenomenal number of 28 cods over 30 kg (66lb) were caught by anglers visiting the Nordic Sea Angling camp on the norwegian island Sørøya. The majorty of theese including the biggest weighing 37 kg (81lb 9oz) were caught on the Magic Minnow Big Bob sea fishing jig. This is a video showing some of the big fish and the action.

Extreme sea trout catches in Denmark and Sweden

Both in Denmark and Sweden sea trout fishing is excellent right now.

Photo: www.FishYourDream.com

On Gotland in the Swedish part of the Baltic Sea the guides Joakim Lyander and Kenny Cronhamn from FishYourDream had some excellent fishing on the D360°, Salty and several other Magic Minnow lures as they really hit the Jackpot and caught 35 trout’s between the two of them during a day. In general the size of the trout’s around Gotland is impressive and so were these with a majority of chrome bright fish between two and three kilos! To be honest, the fishing was so good, that Kenny is convinced that almost any lure would have caught fish. On other days the lure really makes a difference and so far the Magic Minnow Salty 26 g has been “the right stuff” on Gotland, and he wouldn’t recommend a guided trip without bringing a couple of these lures. So far he has caught several chrome bright fish from two kg up to 5,3 kg this year on Salty…
Another Salty enthusiast is René Busk from the Danish shop lystfisk.dk. A little more than a week ago he was fishing in Mariager Fjord with the wind coming right against him. Using a 18 g Salty he caught a few fish, but when he changed for a 26 g version the real bonanza started. During two and a half hour he caught over 70 trout’s and even though he was using a fly as a dropper in front of the lure, the trout’s only took his Salty lure. Another friend was fishing along using other lures and only had six or seven fish.
The trout’s were of mixed size below and above the Danish minimum size of 40 cm and René was using barbless hooks to avoid damage on smaller fish. The occasional huge trout from 2-3 kg and up wasn’t there during those intense hours of fishing, but still – What a day!

Unbelievable cod season – 28 over 30 kg at Nordic Sea Angling

At the NSA (Nordic Sea Angling) camp at Sørøya cod fishing has been nothing less than fantastic this year. Including the four 30 kg cods caught on Kinetic Test team member Jakob Lindbergs boat a total of nine cods over 30 kg was caught last week.

Ulf Hugsén who is managing the camp right now sums up the camp catches so far (March 28th) to a staggering number of 28 cods over 30 kg caught since the beginning of the month. The majority of big fish are caught on Magic Minnow Big Bob including the biggest fish so far at 37 kg and 145 cm. Ulf himself also managed to land his second fish over 30 kg. The exact weight was 32.5 kg and once again Big Bob did the job! The technique Ulf uses for fishing Big Bob is to jig it above the shoals of cod in long slow movements up and down. Every now and then he adds a bit of variation by making some smaller movements or by slowly retrieving the jig.

Five 30 kilo cods caught by Kinetic test-team member

Kinetic test-team member Jakob Lindberg has just returned from his second trip to Sørøya in Norway this season. Once again he was targeting the monster cods caught up there right now. This year the fishing has been phenomenal and a lot of cods in excess of 30 kilo have been caught. The majority of these cods have been caught on the new Magic Minnow Big Bob sea fishing jig – and actually Jakob was the one who came up with the initial idea of making this jig. Together with Nordic Sea Angling he has been an important part of testing and perfecting it.
On his first trip this year Jacob caught nothing less than three cods over 30 kilos on Big Bob. The biggest of these took the scale to 34.0 kilo. In other words expectations for his second trip were sky-high. Jakob and his friends Troels Bill and Mads Sylvester were all hoping to cross the 30 kilo barrier.

Only a year ago most people would say that these expectations were completely insane, but this year anything seems possible. It’s the best season ever and the guys were fishing with the best big cod lure ever made – Big Bob! On the first day of fishing both Troels and Mads had their dreams fulfilled. Both of them caught cods at the exact same weight – 30.5 kilo. On the third day Troels crossed the “barrier” once again. This cod was 30.25 kilo. And finally – towards the end of the trip – Jakob and Big Bob did it again. A large cod engulfed the 40cm jig and soon after Jakob was posing with a 33.2 kilo cod. This cod was his fifth ever over 30 kilo! A remarkable achievement unmatched by any other sea angler in Scandinavia or – as far as we know – any other sea angler worldwide).

“Big Catch” on Westin Platypus

Last year Westin Jätte was the hottest lure for big pikes on some of the biggest clearwater-lakes in Sweden. These lakes hold pikes of gigantic dimensions and the biggest pike of the year – 18.78 kg – was caught on a Westin Jätte. This year a new Westin lure might take over the title as the hottest lure…

Last weekend was the first weekend without ice and one of Swedens top fishing guides, Kristian Keskitalo from
www.bigcatch.se, vent out with his friends Göran Roberts and Stefan Källström. They were trolling with six rods and the lures included a pair of 190mm Westin Platypus lures in colors Drag queen and Zombie. First part of the day was slow, but they had a few fish and lost what seemed to be a really big one.
In the afternoon they went back to the area where the big one was lost, and instantly a nice pike attacked the Drag Queen-colored Platypus. This fish started the action and in total 10 pikes were caught – all of them took one of the two Westin Platypus lures. Four of the pikes were over 100 cm long and the two biggest took the scale down to 10.3 kg and 12.2 kg.
During the week more big pikes have been caught on the Westin Platypus lure. According to a local tackleshop 10 fish exceeding 10 kilos have been caught on Platypus lures so far.

Kristian Keskitalo showing the biggest pike of the day: 12.2 kg!

The guys made a great YouTube video showing a lot of the action and the big pikes.

30.8 kilo monster cod – Johan and Big Bob strikes again!

The cod fishing at Sørøya in Northern Norway seems
to be at its best right now. This past Sunday the head guide at the Nordic Sea Anglings camp, Johan Mikkelsen, caught a cod over 30 kilo. It was the second time during
his career he crossed the 30 kilo barrier and as far as we know, this also makes him the first Swedish angler to ever do this. This day he started out with a 25.5 kilo fish as second cod of the day and then he caught the really
big one – 30.8 kilo.

The amount of cods present was amazing and the average weight was really high. Johan ended the days big cod session by catching a 21 kilo fish. All the cods were caught on the 730 g Magic Minnow, Big Bob jig.Lately Johan has been using one of our new Edge 3776-T rods. It’s a 5’2”
Speed jigging rod developed for tropical fishing. According to Johan it’s also a great rod for heavy cods in colder regions.

Kinetic Test Team member Jakob Lindberg also had a great day. In total the team on his boat caught nine fish over 20 kilos.
The biggest took the scale to 25.1 kilo.
The day after Johan was “grounded” and had to take care of work ashore in the camp, while Jakob and his team had another crazy day. In total they had seven fish over 20 kilos and the biggest was another monster for Jakob. At a weight of 30.3 kilo he caught the third cod over 30 kilos during his many years as a passionate cod angler.

Monster char on ice fishing lures and vertical jigging rods

There’s no doubt that some of the biggest landlocked arctic char in Scandinavia are found in some of the Norwegian lakes housing fish farms. Last weekend Kinetic product developer Elias Narvelo was fishing a Norwegian water together with test team member Fredrik Hansen and their friends Thomas Ringstrømm and Jesper Cramer. In total they were able to land 111 char between the four of them. The technique more or less ice fishing techniques adapted to boat fishing. Best lures were Magic Minnow Titicaca and Titicaca 2Blink with 10-15 maggots on the single hook below the lure. The rods were Lokka Heavy ice fishing rods and the new Edge 3776 Vertical Jigging. As the name suggest the Edge rod was designed for vertical jigging – especially for large zanders. It proved to be excellent for this kind of fishing. Providing the angler with a great feeling of what’s going on, great bite detection and excellent hook setting and fighting properties.
Four of the chars caught exceeded the four kilo mark and Fredrik caught the two biggest as he was using his Edge rod and a glow/black Titicaca 98mm lure. At a weight of 5.2 and 5.8 kilos these were really massive fish.
Fredrik is now working on a full story on the trip. This will be featured in a future issue of the fiske-feber magazines in Denmark and Sweden.

A: Thomas Ringstrømm caugth this 4.8 kilo beauty.

B: The New Edge 3776 Vertical Jigging rods performed excellent as Fredrik Hansen was fighting the biggest char of the trip.

C: The Magic Minnow Titicaca glow/black accounted for several big fish like this 3.4 kilo char presented by outdoor writer and test team member Frederik Hansen.

D: Releasing a huge 4.4 kilo char back into the lake. There are several local rules – written and unwritten – to take care of.
Only local rental boats can be used and the team released all their fish unharmed.

30.5 kilo cod – Insane cod action on Big Bob!

Saturday the weather at Sørøya in northern Norway was a bit rough, but the two Kinetic test team members Jakob Lindberg and David Thormar didn’t mind. They were in the middle of some of the craziest cod action ever experienced. Jakob is one of Northern Europe’s most hard core sea anglers and after driving the boat for half an hour he found the fish and there were more of them than he could ever imagine. 79 of the cods caught this day crossed the 10 kilo mark and out of these seven were over 25 kilos! The biggest was an impressive cod weighing 30.5 kilos. All of the biggest fish were caught on the new Magic Minnow Big Bob jig designed for this kind of fishing.
Allowing the big cods to decompress a few meters below the surface before bringing them to the boat makes it possible to release more than nine out of ten fish unharmed, so only a few cods were kept.
With a catch like this there’s always a risk that expectations might become sky high. It’s important to remember that Jakob and David are really experienced anglers, still it’s the best start of the season ever at the Nordic Sea Angling (NSA) camp and of course we are proud of the fact that our new Big Bob sea fishing jig was part of making it happen!

Time for monster cods on Big Bob!

At Nordic Sea Anglings camp on Sørøya in northern Norway it’s time for monster cods. During the coming weekend and the following days the weather forecast looks perfect and everything is ready for non-stop sea fishing action. The so called “Skrei” – a strain of cod from the Barents Sea – are abundant in the waters around the island right now and March/April is usually the time when many of the biggest cods are caught.
So far strong winds has made fishing almost impossible for the last week, but for a few hours calmer conditions allowed the NSA guide Johan Mikkelsen and the boat mechanic Mats to test the new Magic Minnow Big Bob jigs. It didn’t take long before Johan was able to catch the first cod of the day – an impressive 19 kilo fish. Soon after an even bigger cod couldn’t leave Mats’ jig alone and he was able to land a 21 kilo fish.

Johan Mikkelsen 19 kg.                                                            Mats' 21 kg.

The session only lasted for one hour until the wind picked up, but it showed the potential of the area and the new Magic Minnow Big Bob jigs. There’s no doubt that these jigs will be catching some really huge cods during the next many days…

Big Baltic Sea Trout’s on Salty lure

The Swedish island Gotland located in the Baltic Ocean approximately 80 km east of Oskarshamn offers mile after mile of beautiful coastline and pristine sea trout fishing. The trick is of course to find the spots where the big trouts are hiding and to know how to catch them. The guides from FishYourDream know how! We just received a report from guide Kenny Cronhamn telling of excellent fishing during the last weeks and perfect conditions right now, when all ice has disappeared and it’s possible to fish all over the island. The best lure so far has been the Magic Minnow Salty 26g in a color called “Pattegrisen”. Bright chrome fish up to 4.9 kilos and several between 2.4 and 3.6 kilos have been caught on this lure. Furthermore Kenny tells that he and his clients have experienced some good days with several fish between 60 and 80 cm.
For more information on guided trips to Gotland you should check out
www.FishYourDream.com. The spring season is starting soon and if the fishing continues like the last weeks it’s going to be fantastic…

112 cm - Last big pike of the ice fishing season?

The other day Daniel Hein from Kinetic was out on the ice on a small Danish lake to try our Kinetic ice fishing rods and our new Kinetic Icecore drills. It was a quick afternoon session and the drill was used extensively. Luckily the quality of the drill made the job easier, and the pikes also seemed to cooperate:
“After catching five smaller pike, we decide to drill a few more holes even though the day is coming to an end. At first nothing happens and we start packing our gear. We are about to take in the last rod as something attack the baitfish. In a steady pace the line disappears into the hole over the deepest part of the lake. As I strike and set the hooks the response is solid and heavy. There’s no doubt. It’s a big pike. After a few runs and some heavy headshaking the head of a big pike shows up in the 200 mm hole. Without further complication I’m able to get a gill grip and land the fish. It’s carefully placed in a weigh sling and the weight is determined: 10.9 kilos. The length of the impressive fish is measured to 112 cm. After a few photos in the very last light of day, the pike is safely returned to its world below the ice.
It is important to point out, that we never keep a pike out of the water in freezing temperatures, since there’s a risk of harming their eyes. Luckily the temperatures this day was above freezing,” says Daniel.
Right now temperatures in Denmark are relatively high and the ice is melting. Daniels pike might very well be the last big fish of the short Danish ice fishing season.

Westin Platypus vs. monster perch

The rolling action of Westin Platypus is deadly to most predators. It’s no secret that big pikes were the main targets in mind when designing this lure, but perch seems to love them as well. The latest choking report comes from Henrik Lützen from the Danish shop Predator Sportsfishing who was on the water at the end of last week:
“I had a super day of fishing, says Henrik. We were targeting big pikes and caught several with the two biggest around seven kilos, but the big surprise of the day was not the pikes!

We were trolling the lake with four rods out – one of them with my last Parrot Special colored 57 g Westin Platypus. During the day 25 fish were caught in total and out of these nothing less than 18 were caught on the same rod. The rod with the Platypus! As I mentioned there were other big predators than pike around. Three monster perch were caught. The two “smaller” ones where 1.7 and 1.8 kilos and the biggest measured 47 cm and had a weight of 2.1 kilos! It was –of course – caught on the Platypus lure. This trip is far from the only time I see this lure outperform everything else, and I’m just sorry they were sold out and this was the only one I had left.”
Henriks huge 2.1 kilo lake perch is by far the biggest we have heard of, since the new lure arrived in the shops, but it is far from unusual that perch from 700 grams and up attacks this lure. We were actually able to film it when a 800 g perch attacked underwater and was caught by 5 years old Christian Eldor. Spend a minute to watch the entertaining video!

We have also received reports on big pikes caught using
the Platypus lure. In December Wolf Dieter Kaiser from
Ruegenfishing.de caught a pike measuring 112 cm and 11.2 kilo. It also took the Parrot Special color, that Henrik used for his perch. Other colors that have worked well for Wolf and the brackish water pikes at Rügen are Emo and Natural Pike.

New Magic Minnow monster jig - Big Bob

A wicked bad-boy is ready to hit the sea fishing camps, the charter boats and all the fast boats out to catch the big one. Big Bob is the nastiest sea fishing jig to ever swim in the North Sea.
Every year during late winter and early spring the so called “Skrei” – the big pelagic cods from the Barents Sea – gathers close to the coastline of northern Norway of to eat and spawn. The amount of fish is unbelievable and the biggest cods found here are the biggest cods found anywhere in the World. Big Bob is designed to play with these big boys as well as the biggest halibuts. No matter if you are out to set a new European cod record or out to catch a big “barren door”, you now have the choice of trying Big Bob in two sizes: Big Bob, 470g and 30cm or the really Big Bob measuring 730g and 40cm.

- 2 models: 470g/30cm – 730g/40 cm
- 5 colors
- Designed for huge saltwater predators
- Active eyes and durable painting
- Attachment wire-eye for additional stinger hooks
- Great swimming-action
- 100+ lbs Gozen PE-braid assist/stinger rig included
- Ultra sharp Japanese style sea fishing hooks
- Integrated single hook + one #3 heavy duty stinger rig treble (470g)
- Two #3 heavy duty stinger rig trebles (730g)

Available in the following colors:

Designed with North Sea cod experts:
Big Bob was designed to meet specifications from the staff of guides working at Nordic Sea Anglings many camps in Norway. During last season 20 cods in excess of 30 kilos was caught at the NSA camps and the list of big cods over 20 kilos is unbelievable. There is little doubt that the guys from NSA are the leading experts on how to catch the biggest “skrei” found in Norway. One of the best methods is to find the big shoals of cod and present a big jig just above the shoal. “The biggest cods are at the top of the shoals and large jigs will catch larger cods – a really large jig like Big Bob will make it possible to target the biggest cods”, says Jimmy Andersson from Nordic Sea Angling. “Even the small size is big compared to other jigs and if the weather gets a bit nasty I’m looking forward to the improved line control that the big model will offer”, says Jimmy. “I’m also looking forward to be using the new Big Bob models for targeting halibut. I have high expectations that the weight of these sea fishing jigs will make them a perfect choice for jig trolling after huge halibuts in deeper water”.

Almost spooled by 55 kilo Mekong Catfish

While spending Christmas in Thailand Kinetic test team member Henrik Carl had the opportunity to fish at the famous Gilhams Fishing Resort located in the Krabi province. The lake holds several different big fish species from Asia, South America, Europe and Africa, and during three days of fishing Henrik caught 10 different species and 26 fish in total. His catches included Redtail catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus), Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas), Siamese giant carp (Catlocarpio siamensis) and a Arapaima (Arapaima gigas). The biggest of these was a 55 kilo Mekong catfish. These giants are known to be some of the hardest fighting freshwater fish, and for 45 minutes this fish was displaying its strength to a point where Henrik had to jump in the water to follow and avoid being spooled!

Monster Tuna Fishing – 4 over 1000 lbs!

In muscles, stamina, strength and size nothing comes close to the Bluefin Tuna. For many years the waters out of Prince Edwards Island in Nova Scotia was the place where these brutes gathered to feed on herrings and mackerels but then they more or less disappeared for decades. Thanks to strict commercial restrictions and management the monster tunas are back! Bluefin’s exceeding 1000 and even 1500 pounds visit these waters and a carefully managed charter business is allowed to take sports fishermen out on the ultimate adventure – to challenge a giant Bluefin!
Thomas Petersen from kineticfishing.com and three of his friends took up the challenge and caught four Bluefin’s over 1000 lbs!
This is their video from a monster tuna fishing trip…

Pikefishing in Finland

The Pikefishing season in the Finnish archipelago around Turko had a slow start this autumn. In end November Thomas Petersen and Peter Kirkby from Kinetic were visiting Test team member Mikael Sarelin and his friend Jani Hannula. Water temperatures were still high and the pikes were hard to catch and had not really moved into shallow water. Still the four anglers managed to make a reasonable result including a 7.5 kg beauty caught on a pikefly by Mikey and a strong fighting 8.5 kg fish caught on Westin Jätte Shallow Runner by Peter. Once again the Shallow Runner proved to be a perfect lure for brackish water pike.

Since this trip the water temperatures has been dropping, and a small report from Mikey tells that the pike fishing in December is now at its best:
“The watertemperatures are between 2-3 degrees Celsius, and the days are really short now, says Mikey. Sunrise is at around 9 am and sunset at about 4 pm. I really haven't had the time to go fishing as much as I'd liked to, but the quality of the fishing has been great! During the last two trips we've caught three big pikes and had some more chasing our flies.
The three largest ones have measured between 9.3-10.5 kilos, and all of them have been taken while floattubing on some of the really shallow bay-areas in the archipelago.

I've been fishing a Hardy Proaxis 9' #9 and I must say that I love it: It casts big flies with ease and performs unbelievably well with big fish. When float tubing, I've been using it together with Rio Outbound Short lines, with a sink1 or intermediate tip depending on how shallow waters I fish. When fishing from a boat were longer casts are preferred, I go for the Rio Outbound with a normal length head, either with an intermediate or sink 2 tip. Works great!”
The excellent photos of Mikey with a 9.3 kilo pike were shot by photographer Hasse Härkönen who accompanied him for a day of float tubing.

Put and Take lake: ”Citadellet”

Edge 3776 in battle with the brook trout                                Elias showing one of the colourful brook trouts

Elias Narvelo and Joel Jönsson from Kinetic went to an interesting Put and Take lake in south part of Sweden called ”Citadellet” (old fortress from the 1500’s) to try out a new fishing-technique with a spinning rod. Once they got there the temperature was showing only 4°C and hard wind (12-14m/s) didn’t bring smiles on their faces. This wasn’t very promising for catching lots of fish but the products needed to be tested. They caught two chars/brook trout’s (Salvelinus fontinali) and lost two rainbow trout’s during short time by using the new technique, and due to the harsh weather they had to stop fishing only after 2 hours.

The lake/moat is unfortunately closed for the season and opens again in the spring 2012. What makes this Put and Take special is that they are pumping saltwater from the sea and average depth is around 4-6 meters, which means that water quality and fish is top class any time of the year.

Vättern – Char on D360°

Vättern is the second largest lake in Sweden and has a good population of salmon, char and big pike. Normally salmon and char are caught by trolling but Elias and Joel from Kinetic, went to Vättern for salmonfishing from the rocks on the west part
of the big lake. It was impossible to see any feeding salmon due to the hard wind. After one hour of fishing Elias caught a beautiful char from the rocks on the new Inline lure from Magic Minnow, D360° in the color “Three Amigos”.

The Char was carefully released back into the freshwater-lake Vättern.

This is a big pike Dad...

Torben Christensen from Kinetic spends much time with his son Tobias on different lakes here in Denmark. It has become more trips for perch and pike this fall. Tobias has become a “hard-hitter” on the lakes and do not always want to end the fishing trip when Dad wants to. Tobias stubbornness put Torben in place on one of their last tour in mid-November. Late in the afternoon and with the last light in the horizon chose Tobias switch to a fresh Roach to fish with on the sliding float. When the float was in line with the last float Tobias wanted his float to be even further away from the boat. This strategy worked; there were not many minutes before a large pike attached the fresh Roach. As can be seen in the picture, Tobias had a hard and long fight
with the big pike to get it into the boat, on the Devilfish Junior Spin Combo 6’ 2 - 20 g. Tobias commentary during the fight was, “this is a big pike Dad!” He managed to land the big fish with a little help from Dad who got a photo of the pike in the last light. The weight on Tobias’ pike was 9.7 kg…

Tight Lines Tobias - 4 years!

Magic Minnow Sea Fishing - Halibut Fishing in Tromsø Norway

In August this year, three people from Kinetic went for some Halibut action in Tromsø, Norway. The crew consisted of the product developer for Fairpoint Outdoors, Elias Narvelo and the experienced sea-anglers Jakob Lindberg and Nikolaj Bielecki. Given Jakob’s and Nikolaj’s experience from previous tours, the expectations were high.

They arrived on Friday the 19th, and began to fish directly. Fishing was slow with few contacts, but Elias caught one on 20,5 kg in the end of the day on the Giant Jighead 450 g. For the remaining days, they gave everything they had with about 14 hours of fishing each day. The large flounder was simply gone. During the four days of fishing they had 10-15 bites (probably smaller fish) and Nikolaj also lost two Halibut that seemed to be of larger size. So to sum up Elias got four halibuts and Nikolaj three. The “biggest” was the one Elias caught on 20.5 kg and the rest were between 8 - 17 kg. They tested a lot of stuff and all three were fishing with Edge 3776 Boat 20-30 lbs and Godspeed Boat 20-30 lbs with Tica SS458R / V reels.
All of our Magic Minnow jigs became hard tested and all Halibut’s that came up were released naturally back into their element.

We’ve made a short movie with some fun action, enjoy!

To many anglers worldwide, catching a halibut is considered being the ultimate catch. To make this dream come true more and more anglers visit the northern part of Norway to go sea fishing.
Earlier this year Danish TV host Mads Hussing was fishing with sports fishing journalists and experts Jakob Lindberg and Peter Kirkby from kineticfishing.com. They were fishing and shooting footage for a series of fishing shows – “Fiskemagasinet” or in English “The Fishing Magazine” – to be shown on the Danish TV channel DK4 later this year. The fishing took place at two different locations – the Nordic Sea Angling camp at Ringvassøya near Tromsø and Artic Lyngen Sjøcamp at Lyngsfjorden a three hours’ drive east of Tromsø.

During six days of fishing, thirteen halibuts were caught. The two biggest were caught during the last day of fishing in Lyngsfjord. They measured 134 cm and 150 cm in length and the weight of these fishes was estimated to respectively 35-40 kilos and 50 kilos or more. The biggest one was caught by the TV host.

Big halibut – or “storkveite” as they call them in Norway – are off course impressive, but to the small film crew, the most sensational capture was done when filming under-water. Several times they were able to film how halibuts attacked the lure.

A short video showing some of the sensational footage has now been released by kineticfishing.com. This is just a part of the spectacular footage filmed during the trip. More will be shown on the Danish channel DK4, as the new episodes of Fiskemagasinet will be broadcasted in November and December 2011.

The host on Fiskemagasinet, Mads Hussing, says: “For 16 years I have been making the TV show, and I expect this to this to be the best series of shows we have ever made. The halibut is a mysterious and in many ways legendary fish. It is something special to catch these huge fish and it is really spectacular to see underwater footage of how they rise from the bottom to attack a lure! You can really learn a lot from watching these TV shows.”

Curiosity kills the Westin wobblers!

Please see the film where we show clips of the two newest Westin wobblers. Westin Platypus and Westin Multi Jointed, including a clip of the classic Westin Jätte, are now available in a 190 mm version. In all three clips, you can see the pike note the situation before it attacks the wobbler. Please note the peace that rests over the pike before they attack the Westin wobbler. The famous "Westin Roll" makes the difference. Lots of fun, if you like pike fishing.

Westin Platypus, Westin Multi Jointed and Westin Jätte (190 mm) - Available spring 2012.

To test the Westin Platypus

Allan Christensen, the developer of the Westin Platypus had a terrific day on the lake this weekend. With 16 pike in the boat, where the 13 were taken at the Westin Platypus. The number of the day was: 6 pike over 6 kg with the maximum of 8.7 kg at the top reveals a great predator wobbler has seen the light!
Allan’s technique was traditionally spin fishing.

The story behind the Platypus

The Platypus Project was a tough assignment for the Scandinavian lure maker Allan Christensen. We wanted to keep it all secret and we didn’t even have a name for the lure – only a list of impossible demands, including a lot of X-factor and the best rolling movement ever seen on a lure! When we saw the look of the final prototype the name was obvious due to the resemblance of the beak on a real platypus.

“It took me 32 different proto types and countless hours of testing and adjusting to achieve what I was looking for. The result is a unique lure with an incredible action and swimming pattern – even when fished at extreme slow speed for tricky pike during the coldest part of spring. When fished at high speed the action of the lure is just as incredible. I have no doubt that this will become a classic big fish lure in the future. Tight Lines”!

Salmon and monster pike on Kinetic rods

For all kinds of trolling the Kinetic Godspeed G2 Inline rod has become a really popular rod. One of many who love these rods is Christoffer “Totta” Heurlin. When he’s not out fishing, he works selling fishing tackle in the shop “Skena Järn” in Sweden.
In the end of September Christoffer and his girlfriend Jonna Nilsson was trolling in the Baltic Ocean near Simrishamn in the southeastern part of Sweden. This day the Godspeed rods proved their worth. Not only did Christoffer catch a 100 cm salmon weighing 11.7 kilos using one of his Godspeed G2 Inline 9’ rods and 0.34 RIO Powerflex Braid, but his girlfriend caught an even bigger fish measuring 115 cm with a an estimated weight of over 13 kilos – also on a Godspeed Rod.
For pike trolling the inline rods are equally popular. During the first week of October Kristian Svensson – a friend of Christoffer – caught a monster of a pike measuring 124 cm but with a weight of only 11.27 kilos. In peak condition a fish like this would be really massive! This huge fish was caught using the 9’ Godspeed G2 Inline rod for trolling a livebait in a local lake.
The big pike was released after a few photos and actually Christoffer and his friends also release most of the salmon they catch while trolling.

World record golden perch?

September 25th Torben Christensen from Kinetic was up for a surprise as he was fishing on Esrum Lake in Denmark. Not only did he catch a perch in a very unusual size. It also had a very unusual color. The huge perch weighing 1.75 kilos didn’t have the usual green coloration with dark, black stripes. Instead it was completely golden, making it a very unusual sight, as it was brought to the boat from a deep part of the lake.

The golden perch is the same species as a normal perch (Perca fluviatilis).
The unusual color is caused by a mutation similar to that found on golden tench in garden ponds.

Torben caught his fish on a black jig using a Kinetic 6’ rod and a Viva reel. As far as we know this is very likely to be the biggest golden perch ever caught. Who knows? Maybe Torben is now an unofficial world record holder?

Great sea-trout season closure

Along the coast of southern Sweden the seatrout season ends in mid-September. During the last weeks of the season it takes a lot of trips to get tuned in on the fishing, but it can be quite good and there’s a chance of some really big fish.
Einar Gjaldbæk and his son David Thormar from Kinetics Test Team had a tough time trying to find the fish this year. Both of them had several unsuccessful trips to Sweden but on Friday September 11th they finally succeeded. This day Einar had a really beautiful and strong fighting fish weighing 2.5 kilos and David caught a smaller one. The 2.5 kilo was caught on a Magic Minnow Sømmet in the color “Pattegrisen” (pink and white).
The day after Einar was back in Sweden for half a day of fishing. Once again he was using his Magic Minnow Sømmet inline lure, and this day the trout’s went crazy. In total he caught 9 trout’s but unfortunately no really big ones.
Sunday David came along again. His approach was to use a big Magic Minnow Kongetobis lure fished at slow speed in shallow water. This technique proved deadly to a beautiful 3.5 kilo trout, which turned out to be the biggest of the day. The same technique and lure also accounted for a 2.3 kilo trout. Even bigger fish were around that day and with a little luck Einar could have won the family competition. He was also using a Kongetobis when a big fish in excess of five kilos attacked. Instead of taking a run, the fish kept swimming towards Einar before jumping right in front of him. This maneuver is perhaps one of the best ways for a seatrout to get rid of a hook and this was exactly what happened. No monster trout for Einar, but what an experience!
Right now the seatrout fishing in southern Sweden is closed until 1st of January.

Light tackle mackerel bonanza

The mackerels found in Oresund – the strait between Denmark and Sweden – are very strong fighters. They are usually scarce in numbers but quite big in size and this makes light tackle fishing for these mini-torpedo’s a challenge and great experience when you succeed.

Lately Kinetics sales representative in southern Sweden, Fredrik Lundblad, has been very successful when using small strips of herring and serving these in a depth of 6-9 meters.

This Monday morning he was out fishing day together with Amer Zukanovic from the tackle shop Piscari in Helsingborg. This was a great opportunity to test some of the new tackle that will be available in the shops from 2012.  In this case it was a new Edge Dynamic Light Spin rod (9’6” 3-15 g) and the new TiCA Stunna reel. Both rod and reel performed at their very best and during Fredrik and Amer’s short session the two of them caught 20 mackerels from 700 to 1000 grams – in other words a real light tackle mackerel bonanza.

New inline lure for Monster sea trout – D360°

Magic Minnow D360° is an inline lure for sea trout fishing. It is designed to catch more fish– and loose less! It will cast far and has a great irregular action that will attract fish from far away. Occasional spin stops will make it spin and rotate to attract even more trout’s.
The work on this inline lure started 2 years ago. During spring 2011 Kinetic Test Team member David Thormar was test fishing some of the final samples of D360°. His best session revealed just how efficient this new lure can be. He caught a staggering number of 5 silver plated trout’s in excess of 3 kilos each. The biggest took the scale to 4.8 kilos.
The use of inline lures has been very popular in Denmark for many years and the reason is obvious: Once a hooked trout starts rolling in the surface, a regular lure can be used as a lever to get rid of the hook and many trout’s are lost this way. By using an inline lure the lure will simply slide up the line and cannot be used as a lever. This way less fish are lost during the fight.
It is simple to rig a D360°. Run your line through the lure and use a small round or oval bead to protect the knot before tying
the line to a single- or treble-hook of your choice. If you prefer a free swinging hook we recommend mounting the hook on an oval split ring and tying the knot to the one-stranded part of the ring.

• Designed and developed in Scandinavia
• Incredible swimming action
• Lead free construction
• Inline concept – lose less fish!

This autumn Magic Minnow D360° is available at the tackle shops in 10 different colors (including several UltraViolet colors) and 2 different weights – 18 g and 28 g.

Together with our Kinetic Test Team member David Thormar I tested this system while fishing for arctic char from the shore in Greenland. We were using a small Tica Cambria LY and the line lay was absolutely stunning for a reel in this price class, making it possible to fish with ultra-thin braided line without risking line tangles. The slogan of TiCA says BORN TO PERFORM! Arctic char up to 3 kilos are really strong fish. The reel handled them with ease and truly proved to be a born performer”

“Danish” Sturgeons on Kinetic tackle

During the last week Test team member Henrik Carl has been fishing for sturgeon. No – he wasn’t in Canada or Russia. Instead he has been fishing in the small trout lake “Poppelsøen” In Ballerup half an hour from the center of Copenhagen in Denmark.
This summer around 80 sturgeons has been stocked in the lake. The biggest are Siberian sturgeon up to 10 kilos – there are several of medium size Russian sturgeon and finally some small Beluga sturgeon. During 3 trips Henrik has caught and released 10 of these. He found that not only is the Kinetic 13 feet Godspeed Ultralight Spin a perfect rod for trout fishing with bombarda floats and long leaders, it’s also a great rod for coarse fishing for all kinds of fish including sturgeon and Henrik uses it with a Viva Tactics free line reel.
Henrik has been using pellets, shrimps or small pieces of herring fished on a sliding rig with a small weight or a feeder and this set-up seems to work perfect. So far the biggest three biggest are Siberian sturgeons weighing 5.5 – 5.7 and 7.0 kilos. All of them were extreme fighters leaping out of the water several times. The biggest took nothing less than half an hour before surrendering.

Asp – the Scandinavian Tarpon!

Nikolai Holttinen is one of our local area sales managers in Finland. Besides doing a great job, he is also a skilled angler. This is a report from his latest trip:
“Asp (Aspius aspius) is quite a rare fish in Finland. This roach-like carnivore holds a reputation of being a mysterious fish and is to be known to be a great fighter – maybe the closest we get to a Scandinavian mini tarpon. Unlike other roach species Asp is a pure "fish eater" and when the waters start to warm up, their favorite food is bleak. It's magnificent to watch how the asps strike in to those bleak schools just below the surface!!
Last week I had the opportunity to try to catch this beautiful fish together with one of my good customers, Jukka Halonen from Sportia Pekka. He lives close to a water system that probably holds the biggest asp populations in all of Finland! Average size in about 3 kilos and last year they caught two fish close to 7 kilos!
The fish were there attacking the big schools of bleak from below, but we couldn’t catch them. We tried everything in small spoons and wobblers trying to imitate those bleaks but nothing seemed to work. The breakthrough came as we chanced tactics and started to cast bigger and heavier Great Herons. Immediately we started to get results!

In my case, I think a bit of beginners luck was involved, but soon after I had caught my two first asps. Jukka also caught one as he changed for a Great Heron.  All fish were estimated at a weight between 3.5 and 4 kilos. Both of mine took a 22g Great Heron (Veri Good color) and Jukka caught his fish on a Pattegrisen colored Great Heron!”

Trolling for Pike

I have been trolling with large floating wobblers at depths between 3 and 6 meters, says Jess.

In May, after the pike spawning i Denmark, trolling with different Westin wobblers has paid off with a large number of pikes to
Jess Glargaard from Kinetic:

“The pikes have been gathered at the top the smaller shoals in the lakes or at the upper part of the drop-off’s. The fishing has been excellent and a lot of pikes has been caught and released. All pikes have been very aggressive – attacking the lures ferociously. And the rate of hook-ups has been high. A depth finder/plotter has been a great help, since the waypoints plotted at every strike soon revealed a pattern on where to find the pikes. On one of the resent trips 21 pikes were caught. A Concealed Fish colored Westin Jätte 170 mm accounted for the biggest fish measuring 107 cm at a weight of 8.1 kg. It was obvious that the pikes where very active, so I tried a new set-up using a Paternoster Tackle to present a sinking Westin Jerk in a slow glider movement close to the bottom. This method accounted for a large part of the pikes caught this day.
It is important to adjust the weight of the sinker according to the depth. I prefer app. 90 g when fishing at a depth of 3-6 m. I let the sinker drop to the bottom before taking a couple of turns on the reel to lift the sinker and make the set-up work right above the weed. When fishing at other depths it is simply a matter of adjusting the weight of the sinker”.

Giant pike on Westin lure – 18.78 kg!

Some of Sweden’s largest pikes are caught in the huge lake Vättern. Locating the pikes in this water can be quite a challenge, but if you succeed and catch a big one it is really worth a lot of hard work.
Just a few days ago one of the lakes monsters was caught on a 230 mm Westin Jätte in the color “Red Hot Black” by Glenn Franzén from Mullsjö, Sweden. Here’s his story:

”The pike I caught April 25th. had a weight of 18,78 kilos and measured 125 cm. I was fishing with my dad, and usually most of our pikefishing is done with jerkbaits. This day we changed tactics and started trolling, as we were planning to have a cup of coffee and something to eat.

We never got to the coffee, before one of the rods flexed. I grabbed the rod to set the hooks. The lure –a Red Hot Black” Westin Jätte 23 cm – had been fishing in a depth of 3,5 meters and now it was stuck in the jaws of a big pike. The pike only did three short runs during the 2-3 minutes fight. Then she came to the surface and we could admire the size of this beast. The landing net was way too small, but we still managed to lift the pike into the boat.
After unhooking, weighing and measuring it as fast as possible we shoot a few photos before she was released back into the deep water of Vättern. A total feeling of happiness is the only way to describe the situation. I had just caught the pike of a lifetime! I can hardly remember anything from the following couple of hours and I guess it was like being drugged with happiness.”

Not only did Glenn catch his giant pike one of our Westin Lures, he was also using a Kinetic Viper 9’ rod and the new RIO Powerflex braid 0.18 mm (10.4 kg) – a brilliant new braided line showing superior strength and abrasion resistance.

Salmon right away - membership paid off

A membership of the local club paid off for Peter Kirkby from Kinetic. After several visits to the small Danish river Storaaen, Peter decided that it was time to stop buying the regular day licenses and time to become a member of the local fishing club “Holsterbro og Omegns Fiskeriforening” (
www.hof-storaa.dk) instead. The club plays an important role in the work done to restore the Danish salmon population in the small local river and despite the successful salmon fishing club members have experienced for the last couple of years the club is still welcoming new members with open arms. When Peter and a couple of friends were visiting the river the weekend before Easter the new membership paid off almost right away. Peters was using the new Edge Dynamic 10’ 10-40 g rod, a Viva V7 LTX reel, RIO Powerbraid and an old favorite Rooster Tail spinner when a salmon took the lure after fishing for an hour or so. After a short but hectic fight Peter was able to pose with a beautiful 7.25 kg and 88 cm spring salmon.

The rest of the weekend didn’t result in more bites and after a shocking start Peter was reminded that Danish Salmon fishing is still hard work if you want to be successful.
Since this catch only a handful of salmon have been reported from the river. Due to the hot spring weather the water level has been constantly dropping, and a bit of rain would certainly be helpful for the salmon run.

Westin Jätte is unbeatable – 17 pikes in 5 hours

When it comes to trolling for big pikes trolling for big pikes Westin Jätte is one of the very best lures to use. Judging from the report we received from Robin Lindberg, we believe this point of view is shared by the guys from the Swedish Team Ace Of Pikes from the Örebro area:

“A few days ago my friend Viktor and I decided to go pike fishing in a new lake. Rumors were telling of both numerous pikes and really big ones, so our choice was to use small line mounted sideplaners and some large pikelures/wobblers. Since the lake is quite shallow our wobblers were mounted only half a meter behind the sideplaners and these were fished 15-20 m from the boat.

In calm, sunny weather we started fishing. The plan was to use several rods, but only two lines were out, when the first pike attacked. Since then it was pretty much nonstop action with more than 20 pikes caught and 5 lost in just 5 hours. The biggest ones measured 9.5 kg - 110 cm, 6.7 kg - 97 cm and 6.6 kg – length unknown. 17 of the pikes were caught on Westin Jätte in the color “Natural Pike”

PS: The three biggest were – of course – caught on Westin Jätte. Another proof of how unbeatable these lures are ”

The “Natural Pike” color Robin and Viktor was using is one of the classic colors that seem work everywhere. Another hot color this year is “Red Hot Black” – an old color having a great comeback. Exactly this color has been extremely popular in the area south of Stockholm in Sweden. The explanation is simple: Two of Sweden’s most skilled and experienced fishing guides – the brothers Robert and Ronny Andén – found out it worked really well. For a couple of years they have been repainting several lures back to this color. This year they don’t have to worry…

Five over three kilos - lots of big seatrout’s on new Magic Minnow lure

It is not very common to release a beautiful three kilos seatrout in prime condition, but it is the only right thing to do, when you already have plenty of big fish on the shore. This was exactly what happened to Kinetic test-team member David Thormar a week ago, as he was testing the new Magic Minnow lure “D360”
– a lure that will be introduced later on this year.
D360 proved to be perfect for big seatrouts on this day, when David was fishing the Baltic coast in south eastern Denmark. The wind was strong and the waves where getting bigger and bigger, as David was fishing a part of the beach where several other anglers were trying their luck as well. This day David and the new Magic Minnow D360 were in a league of their own as David hooked into one big fish after the other. Several big fish were kept including fish weighing 3.2 and 4.8 kilos while others were released. In total he hooked into 9 fish and only one of them were lost. Unfortunately it was the biggest one – a huge fish around 7 kilos lost close to the landingnet. The 4.8 kilos fish was caught only a few casts later and it looked small! Out of the total catch five of the trout’s were perfect conditioned silvery fish over three kilos.

We will not show you a photo of the lure, yet… and a photo of the biggest 4.8 kilos fish will have to do for now. David is working on a couple of stories for the Danish magazine “Fisk & Fri” and you will be able to read more details on the catch in a coming issue.

More Silver

The product developer at Fairpoint Outdoors, Elias Narvelo has been fishing on the Danish and Swedish coast for the last two weeks. By combining pleasure with work he had some good trips in both countries using Edge 3776 Spin 10’ 7-30 g. On shallow water he uses Mini Goby 8,5 g in the color “Confused Winter” and Sømmet 28 g “Sinking Wedding” in the deeper spots. In the clear and cold water it’s a hard work, but hard work pays off. Two smaller silver Seatrouts on 2 kg was caught in Sweden and Denmark and a top fish on 3,6 kg from the Baltic coast in south eastern Denmark. The trouts were “nailed” on a sample of
the new Eagle Claw Lazer Trokar hook.

Salmon trolling is red hot

Right now trolling for salmon in the South Western part of the Baltic Sea is as good as it gets. Torben Christensen from Kinetic was hoping to take part of the action, when he took his boat “Sjakalen” down to the waters between Denmark and the German island Rügen on Friday, April 15th. The weather was perfect with calm seas and sunshine, and it didn’t take long before Torben had a chance to put some of our different trollingrods to a test.
Four salmon and a seatrout were caught. The biggest salmon was a hard fighting monster weighing 13.6 kilos and measuring 110 centimeters.
It took a 300 feet run straight away and offered all the salmon action Torben was hoping for.

Huge 40 lbs salmon caught on Hardy flyrod

April 1st the Danish salmon fishing season started in the rivers Skjern Å, Varde Å, Storåen and several other smaller Danish salmon rivers. Like always early season salmon fishing is not easy and you have to work hard to catch a fish, but if you succeed it can be the fish of a lifetime.

Kurt Johannesen is one of the local anglers flyfishing for salmon at the small river Storåen. On the 2nd of April he was at the river fishing with two of his freinds and his son Pauli. Kurt was fishing with his Hardy Swift Mk II 14´ double handed rod and his Hardy Cascapedia Mk II reel. In our humble opinion this is one of the greatest set ups you can use while flyfishing for big salmon and it soon proved to be able to handle a really huge salmon. As Kurt was fishing a spot where he lost a big salmon last year he suddenly had a solid take. Soon after the sound of his Cascapedia was heard from far away as the salmon took a solid run 100 meters upstreams. For a while it stopped, and then continued another 40 meters. Kurt had to run for the fish and during the next 20 minutes he managed to keep it at a close distance.

Kurt’s son Pauli was ready to assist in landing the huge salmon, and as soon as he had the chance, the fish was dragged onto the bank. It turned out to be a massive fish measuring 125 centimeters and 18.2 kilos – a little more than 40 pounds. So far it is the biggest flycaught salmon in Denmark this year.

As mentioned earlier Kurt was using his Hardy rod &reel. The line was a fast sinking integrated shootinghead and the fly was a “Sjønnes Uldsok” tubefly – a variant of the well-known Swedish fly “Ullsocken”.

For those practicing catch & release it is worth mentioning that salmon fishing in this small river is managed by a catch limit on a small number of salmon each year. Kurt and his friends are some of the people who have been working hard through the years to reestablish the salmon population. If anyone deserves to bring home a big salmon he’s the one…

Big pikes on Westin Jerk & Westin Jätte

114 cm and 10.8 kg.   (Westin Jerk).                                                 104 cm and 8,2 kg.  (Westin Jätte).

Jess Glargaard from Kinetic had some great pikefishing. The conditions were pretty rough, but he was convinced that it would pay of testing some new waters. The tactic was simple. A little more than a dozen Westin Lures were chosen and brought along in the backpack and off he went looking for spots that weren’t covered in ice.

At the first spot a small pike attacks a Westin Shallow Runner almost right away, but after this there's no action or sign of fish for several hours. A change of lure to a Westin Jerk Intermediate does the trick. Even when fished as slow as possible on a normal fixed spool spinning equipment this lure has a great action and a unique swimming pattern, and soon a 5 kilos pike attacks.

As the evening gets closer, Jess moves to another spot. Judged by the look of it, Jess is not convinced that this spot has a lot of pike-appeal, but it dosen't take long before something heavy attacks his Westin Jerk. After a great fight and a short visit on the unhooking mat a 9.2 kilos pike is returned back in the cold water.

As the daylight slowly starts to disappear another big pike decides to attack the Intermediate lure. It takes several solid runs before Jess is able to land the fish. Soon after the tripod and the camera is ready and a few photos are shot before releasing yet another marvelous pike measuring 114 cm and 10.8 kg.

In Denmark the pike fishing season closes in April, but right before the closure the Westin Jätte proved its worth as well and Jess was rewarded with a 8.2 kilos and 104 centimeters pike.

This year’s first cod over 30 kg – and Lots of big fish on Giant Jighead and Red Ed

At Nordic Sea Anglings camp at Sørøya in Norway this year’s hunt for giant cod started last friday when the when the wind finally calmed down. Kinetic test team member Jakob Lindberg is one of Scandinavia’s most experienced sea anglers, and he was there with a couple of friends fishing for four days.

They were using Giant Jigheads and they also had a few samples of the new Magic Minnow Red Ed. Every day these jigs produced big fish over 25 kg. The biggest cod was caught on a Giant Jighead during their third day of fishing. Mads Sylvester Jensen was the one shouting out his excitement after catching a new personal best that took the scale to amazing 30.8 kg!

Jakob himself was a bit more humble and took a 25.2 kg cod as his best on this trip. This fish and a lot of other giant cods were actually released after their size had been determined by using a weigh sling. Jakob explains that it is important not to reel in the big fish to fast and to let them decompress below the boat. This way more than 90% of the cods can be returned unharmed and only a few fish are handed over to local fishermen.

By the way: We have had a lot of requests on the new sea fishing jigs from Magic Minnow – Red Ed, Flat Matt and Scarry Jerry. They will be available in Sweden, Norway and Finland during April.

As mentioned a few samples of the new Red Ed Jigs are currently being used at Sørøya. Jakob and his friends caught 12 cods over 20 kilos and several of these were on Red Ed. Sørøya Guide Ulf Hugsén tried a Red Ed (Blue Glamour color) and lost a very big fish when the line broke. He tied on a Rose Fish color instead and caught three fish from 15 to 22.6 kilos in no time. Right now Torben Christensen from Kinetic and the camp record owner Filip Faurholm are fishing up there and have just caught a 23 kilo cod on Red Ed.

Halibut Fishing in Norway

This extremely strong 33 kilo halibut was caught during spring 2010, when fishing from Nordic Sea Anglings camp in Sørøya, Northern Norway. It was caught in mid water on a 450 g Magic Minnow Giant Jighead. During the fight it went all the way from the surface and 60 meters down to the bottom twice!
Magic Minnow Giant Jighead is the lead free Scandinavian version of the original Giant Jighead designed and developed by sportsfishingjournalist and seafishing expert Volker Dapoz for big Norwegian halibut and other heavy-weight species. This system has accounted for the latest 2010 world record Atlantic halibut as well as record size cods up to 39.4 kg!

Insane Sea Trout Fishing

When the ice break up and melts or drift away from the small fjords in Denmark sea trout fishing can be nothing less than insane. Right now it seems like the winter is losing its grip and during the next couple of days, strong winds and higher temperatures will make the ice disappear. Be ready when it happens.
During the beginning of February the ice broke and many fjords were open for a week or so. Peter Kirkby from Kinetic was at the right place at the right time, when it happened. The trout’s went crazy and during a hectic day of trout fishing he caught 20 trout’s. The biggest were a couple beautiful silver-plated trout’s around 1.5 -2.0 kilos.

The two best lures of the day was a 14 g
Magic Minnow Goby in the new 2011 color “Pattegrisen” (Sucking Pig) and a small 8.3 g
Mini Goby in a transparent brown color.

Seatrouts with a top fish

The product developer at Fairpoint Outdoors, Elias Narvelo was out trolling with Fredrik Nilsson from Team Anticimex a few weeks ago. The hope and confidence were on top since Fredrik before experienced good fishing and caught the cruel and impressive seatrout of 10 kg!

In February before Oresund was closed because of the ice, they caught 3 nice seatrouts with a top fish on 5,1 kg. The two smaller ones won their freedom and could return back for some more herring.

Last weekend of January Kinetic test team member Mikael Sarelin went for big pikes from the ice. Here’s his report:

“At this time of the year the pike fishing is typically not great in numbers, but the size of the fish can often be quite nice. This was the case this Sunday as well, when my friend Jani and I went fishing. During the whole day we only got two fish, but the size was more than OK with the smaller one weighing about 4 kilos and the bigger one measuring 9,5kg/110cm. It's getting lighter day by day now and in a month or so the fish will become more active as the ice fishing season is about to peak”.

Freshwater cod

The
burbot (Lota lota) is the only member of the cod order living in freshwater and in some parts of Scandinavia ice fishing for burbot is quite popular. During this winter Anders Dahlen, Jimmy Nordling and Kent Svensson from Sweden have been busy using their Kinetic Rauma rods for some burbot fishing. The biggest fish so far was caught by Anders who managed to land a 4.890 kg fish. Jimmy and Kent also caught some nice fish with the two biggest weighing 4.1kg and 4.24 kg.

Anders Dahlen caught this nice 4.89 kg burbot.

XXL size salmon and trout from Oresund

The last couple of days some really big fish have been caught while trolling in Oresund – the small strait between Denmark and Sweden. It started last Friday, January 21st, when Frederik Lundblad from Kinetic was accompanied by Mårten Dahlqvist from the tackle shop Sportfiskedepån in Helsingborg. On board they had the new Goodspeed G2 trollingrods and all reels were loaded with the new RIO Powerflex Braid. The test of this new setup turned out to be as good as it gets…

Fredrik was steering the boat as the rod next to him flexed. This rod was rigged with a Dipsy Diver in front of an original Apex in silver/blue. While handing the rod to Mårten there was no doubt that a big fish had attacked the lure. As Mårten took over, the fish went for an insane run ripping more than 300 feet of line from the reel. At one point the fish crossed in between the other lines, but Fredrik and Mårten managed to keep the lines from getting tangled and soon after they could land the hard fighting beauty.
It turned out to be a sensational salmon measuring 100 cm
and 10.7 kg.
During the same day Fredrik and Mårten also caught a 3.6 kg seatrout and an amazing amount of cod – more than 50 cods in the range from 1/2 to 6 kg were caught.
Two days later Fredrik was back on Oresund in company with another friend, Tommy Nordström. Once again they managed to land a big fish – a 5.0 kg and 71 cm seatrout.

Mårten Dahlqvist (left) and Fredrik Lundblad (right)
showing a 10.7 kg salmon and a 3.6 kg trout.

At the same time a boat with three other friends – Fredrik Nilsson, Anders Olofsson and Robert Dargrik were fishing a little bit north of Fredrik and Tommy. They hooked into an even bigger seatrout and soon after Fredrik Nilsson could pose in front of the camera as he was holding an impressive 10.0 kg and 89 cm seatrout.
This fish was caught on a conventional trolling spoon behind
a Dipsy.
Later on the three friends also caught a 3.9 kg trout on a lure trolled in 45 feet of water. Even the most hardcore anglers
would consider a trout of this size to be a great catch, but compared to a 10 kg trout it somehow didn’t look that big…

This impressive 10.0 kg seatrout from Oresund
was caught by Fredrik Nilsson.

Icefishing advice

In most of Scandinavia the icefishing season is on. The latest report is from our Test Team member Mikael Sarelin:

“Here in the Finnish archipelago the icefishing season is on as well. Yesterday I spent my first day on the ice for this season and we had a good day even if it was nothing close to the Swedish guys (Jonas Olsson & Co.), featured on the Kinetic website. Still we caught some fish and the biggest one was a beautiful pike measuring 8.5 kg/105cm”.

And now when we are talking icefishing, two of the most experienced pike-fishing guides in Scandinavia – the brothers Ronny and Robert Andén – have a word of advice for everyone hunting for big pikes from the ice.

Their big concern is if people know how to handle the fish and know when to avoid icefishing. In cold weather the eyes of a pike are easy to harm – they simply freeze. In low temperatures and in windy conditions, it will only take a short time out of the water before the eyes are harmed, so take care and avoid fishing in these conditions – or avoid lifting the fish out of the water. In calm conditions and temperatures around zero degrees Celsius there’s a far better chance of releasing a pike unharmed, Still you have to be fast and careful.

Two days of Pike Bonanza

During the last weekend of November Kinetic Test Team member Frederik Hansen went boat fishing in Denmark with live bait for some big pikes. The weather forecast wasn’t exactly promising. Snowy weather and freezing temperatures during the morning and evening were the conditions Frederik and his friend Tommy had to face. But with a little help from warm boots, gloves and flotation suits nothing could stop them.

The fishing turned out to be far better than expected. During the day a total of 22 pikes were caught. Most of them were small, but Frederik had a great opportunity to test his Edge
rod, when he hooked into a huge pike. 10.4 kg was the weight of this fantastic fish.

The next day they had to make their way through a thin layer
of ice before reaching open water. Again it proved to be worth the effort. During the day they caught 15 pikes in total and once again Frederik proved to be mister “big fish” when a big pike attacked his bottom bounced live roach rig. Soon after, he was posing together with a 10.9 kg pike.

It didn’t take long before another roach was mounted on the rig. And it didn’t take long before another pike was attacking.
This fish proved to be 9.7 kg. What a way to end a perfect pike bonanza weekend!

Scandinavian Pikefishing - Autumn

In autumn when there's a lot of small baitfish around pike fishing can be quite hectic - if you find the right lures. We were using the brand new Mini Jerk from Westin as well as classic, silver colored, Scandinavian pikefishing spoons like the Magic Minnow lure "Utö". So hang on for a lot of Scandinavian pike and predator action!

Westin Mini Jerk
- New appetizers for the big ones...

The trend in Scandinavian pikefishing is towards more fun and lighter tackle. The new suspending Mini Jerk is easy to cast and fish on a normal spinning rod as well as a light jerkbait set-up. At a size of 100 mm and 32 g it doesn't spook big, vary pikes and you can also try jerking or "cast and retrieve" for perch, seatrout and many others species.
This lure offers perfect castability. You can use it at a steady, fast retrieve in warmer water or at a slow retrieve in cold water. You can also try occasional spin stops and Westin Mini Jerk can even be fished by twitching it or using small, gentle jerk movements.

Westin Mini Jerk
• 32 g / 100 mm     • 15 different colors      • Lead free     • Material: ABS Plastic
• Hook: VMC 9649 BN     • Suspending - running depth: 0-0.5 m     • Full wire-through-body construction

Flat Matt – killer jig for halibut

It doesn’t come more realistic and life-like than these seafishing jigs

As we all know big fish eats smaller fish. When a huge halibut settles down in a shallow, sandy area some of the plaice, flounders, and dabs have to watch their backs. If not, they can pretty sure to get chewed up.
Flatt Matt has a swimming action that imitates a smaller plaice, flounder or dab panicking when they realize there’s a far bigger fish looking from below…
The design of this lure will make it possible to fish close to the bottom without getting snagged in seaweed. It will also sort out the smaller fish and make you target the biggest halibuts down there.
Flat Matt comes in realistic or psyched up colors, which will turn on any big halibut, cod etc. All are made with premium quality, chemically sharpened sea fishing hooks, durable painting and active eyes.

• 400 g / 245 mm    • 5 colors    • Authentic fishlook and swimming action – as close as it gets
• Active eyes    • Durable painting    • Ultra sharp and strong sea fishing hook    • Extra body in package

Flat Matt will be available in 2011. Since it contains lead it is not sold in Denmark.

Flyfishing for pike – what a debut

We have just received a report from our Test team member Mikael Särelin, Finland. From what “Mikey” writes it seems like the pike fly fishing in his local brackish water estuaries is hot right now:
“Last weekend I went floattubing for pike with my friend Erkki. Erkki is a hardcore flyfisherman but has no prior experience of flyfishing for pike, so I figured it was time to do something about it. I invited him over and we spent the weekend fishing. We had a great time and Erkki caught his first ever pike on the fly. Better yet, we hooked two large specimens simultaneously. While Erkki's pike weighed in on respectable
10,9 kilos, mine measured 7,3 kilos. We caught both pike on my home-tied Slinky Fibre flies. Erkki was using a RIO Scandinavian Pike WF10F/S2 line and I was fishing a Rio Outbound short WF9F/I line together with my Hardy Zane rod and reel”.

10.9 kilos! Erkki was flyfishing for pike for the first                    Mikey showing a nice 7.3 kilo pike.
but probably not last time.
It took the fly simultaneously with the big one Erkki caught.

Floattubing for big pike

In Finland the pike catches picked up in the beginning of May. According to our new test-team member Mikael Sarelin floattubing for big pike is high class entertainment - especially on days like the one he experienced in the beginning of the month:
“Together with a friend I went floattubing in the evening and we had some great fishing. My friend caught two 5 kg fish whereas I managed to catch pikes weighing 7,8 kg and 10,8 kg, plus some smaller fish. On top of that we had some real monsters (120 cm +) chasing our flies, but this time they outsmarted us,” says Mikael.
Mikael was fishing with his Hardy Zane rod & reel using a #9 Rio Outbound Floating/intermediate line and a homemade Craft Fur Deceiver.

On the big outdoor fair held I Riihimäki in Finland June 10th to June 13th Mikael will be making 3 daily shows on floattube flyfishing for pike, explaining all the tackle and techniques needed to catch the big ones.

If you have the chance to visit – don’t miss it…

Tromsø Halibuts + World Record from Iceland

This summer Kinetic test team member Jakob Lindberg took his boat to Norway in pursuit of monster halibut – and what a trip. During 11 days of fishing Jakob and his friends caught 35 Halibuts. What makes this number impressive is the average weight of those fish. Only 3 halibuts had a weight below 23 kilo and 8 of them were above 50 Kilos with the five biggest weighing 70, 75, 75, 95 and 104 kilos! Jakob caught 23 fish out of the total catch, but the biggest one - measuring 195 cm - was caught by Reinhold Meyer.

Capture: Reinhold Meyer, junior (to the left) caught this 104 kilo halibut near Tromsø.
To lift it he was assisted by his father Reinhold Meyer, senior.
Photo: Jakob Lindberg

To handle and weigh those big fish Jakob used a big catfish weigh sling and a 200 kg scale before releasing them unharmed.
If anyone had mentioned a catch of Atlantic halibut like this just a few years ago, they would have been considered as total nutcases, but these years the catches and the knowledge of those big flat predators just seem to reach new levels. Right now there’s a lot of focus on the halibut fishing in Norway, and a lot of big fish have been caught on Giant Jighead, but actually the latest breaking news is from Iceland:
August 5th a new record halibut was caught by German angler Günther Hensel travelling to Iceland with the agency “Kingfisher Reisen”. Günther was using a Giant Jighead to catch the monster.
Right now we are trying to get a permission to use a photo of the fish for the different Medias and for our website. Photos and further details on this fantastic catch and the destination can be found in German language on the website of Kingfisher Reisen:

Magic Minnow Red Ed – realistic and life-like

One of many exiting new products in 2011 is a Magic Minnow seafishing jig imitating a redfish. We are pretty proud, because it doesn’t come more realistic and life-like than these seafishing jigs!
Scientific reports reveal that in many areas redfish (Sebastes marinus) is the main food source for Atlantic halibut. In example scientific research on the stomach content of Atlantic halibut from the important Icelandic fishing grounds in the North Atlantic showed that 75 % of the food by volume was redfish*. The adult redfish is abundant in deep water from 100-1000 m while smaller juveniles are found in Fjords, bays and inshore waters. For fishing in deep water this is the ultimate seafishing jig for halibut. And you can be sure that even when the big halibuts move into very shallow water they will remember and appreciate their favorite snack.
An important part of our development took place at a sea fishing camps in Norway. The results and inputs from our cooperation with Nordic Sea Anglings camps suggest that this is not just a lure – it should be considered as an important part of the food chain!
Red Ed comes in 5 realistic or psyched up colors that will turn on any big halibut, cod etc. It is designed with a unique, interchangeable hook and weight system to slide inside spare bodies. Choose between 2 sizes – 295 g or 395 g including a spare body. All Red Ed jigs are made with premium quality, chemically sharpened sea fishing hooks, durable painting and active eyes.

Lots of big seatrouts

For the last week seatrout fishing here in Denmark has been absolutely crazy. It’s like everyone have seen, heard of or caught big seatrout’s. Here are some of the reports:

Low water success

We all know how changes in weather conditions or water levels can sometimes affect fishing to the worse or the better. Last Monday the water level was extremely low at Nordkysten –– the Danish name of the long coast line found just west of Hamlets old castle Kronborg in Helsingore. Jesper Dahlgren was flyfishing together with a friend at some of their favorite spots and exactly this day the low water was the key to success. The two of them were able to wade and cast in areas that can’t be reached in normal water levels, and after catching several smaller fish Jesper hooked into a big one. This proved to be his largest trout ever. A 72 cm long and 4.5 kilo heavy beauty caught on a home tied STF Kutling – a goby imitation.

Jesper Dahlgren was rewarded with this
fly caught 4.5 kilo trout.

Catch and release

Klaus Nordmann and Jacob Rønnov are close friends of our test team member Frederik Hansen.
The two of them were flyfishing in the inner part of Isefjorden – a large fjord in the eastern part of Denmark – and it only took five casts before Klaus hooked into a huge fish. After a couple of solid runs a large back and a huge tail broke the surface. At this point Klaus was convinced that this fish could be a new “personal best”. After 15 minutes Jacob was ready to assist with the landing net and the two of them managed to land a beast of a male trout in pale autumn colors. It was obvious that this was a pre-spawn fish ready to enter one of the smaller nearby streams. The two of them decided to weigh the fish in the net and release it after a few photos.
Everything went as intended and Klaus could wave goodbye to a 6.4 kilo personal best seatrout.
Klaus was using the popular Danish seatrout fly “Pattegrisen” (the Pig). He also did an – in our opinion – excellent choice of kinetic tackle, jacket and waders. The most important choice of tackle in this case was his landing net. A solid landing net like the Kinetic Waterspeed Coast Net has a floating wooden frame and a very large, small-meshed net bag that will do no harm to the fins of the fish. This makes it possible to catch, weigh and release even the biggest trout’s without any harm.

Klaus Nordmann showing a beautiful 6.4 kilo flycaught
autumn trout. His biggest ever.

In many cases a large landing net will shorten the fight and give you better odds in trying to land a big fish. If you want to release your catch it is important to use a net with a small-meshed net bag that does no harm to the fish and its fins.

Catching the right fish

A cell-phone shot of Peter Rasmussen with his new personal best seatrout from the Danish shores – 6.7 kilo.

We knew he had something big in the boot of his car when Peter Rasmussen called our marketing coordinator in the evening to borrow a scale. He wanted to determine the exact weight of a fish that might be a new personal best. In the spring he caught a 6.5 kilo trout caught on a “Sølvpil”, so this new catch had to be something special… And yes, at 6.7 kilo this was a new PB.
Peter and his friend Thomas had been fishing for several hours in an area steaming with fish. It seemed like a large amount of fish were gathered in this area and during the day both smaller and bigger fish were jumping all over. The only problem was that none of them were biting. In the dusk Peter tried a small copy of a genius Danish inline lure designed by a private lure designer a couple of years ago. After several casts the water behind the lure suddenly looked like if a torpedo was trying to catch up with it. Seconds later a large seatrout had engulfed the lure and was headshaking in the surface. It took a while but Peter finally succeeded in landing the impressive male trout. The hook was in the gills so Peter decided to bring the fish home. On a day with only one fish you could definitely say that Peter caught the right fish. We are of course sorry that it wasn’t caught on one of our lures, but on the other hand we are always looking for new lures and deals with hobby lure designers. Most of these private designed lures are tested for thousands of hours and perfected by making small adjustments and catching lots of fish. If we are able to get a license to produce the original lure we will let you know.

Gone Fishing

Jan Jensen from Fredericia in Denmark knows how to catch big fish in his area. This spring he did one of the most remarkable catches from the Danish coast line this year – a 10.7 kg salmon caught on a Magic Minnow Sølvpil (silver arrow). Lately he’s been working a lot, but last weekend Jan and his friend Thomas Krogh Andersen decided to participate in “Seatrout Open” – a competition held by the Danish shop Go Fishing. For a long time Jan was in the lead with a 3.55 kg trout caught on the already legendary Magic Minnow in-line lure Sømmet (the Nail). In the end he was beaten with a narrow margin of 200 g by two other catches. The biggest of these was a 3.75 kg fish caught on a fly.

Jess Glargaard used a tripod and selftimer to shoot this photo of his 1,61 kilo perch.

Perch fishing

Calm winds and a barometer showing a stabile high pressure is the best indicator for good perch fishing. We had exactly these conditions in the end of September, when Kinetic test team member Jess Glargaard went perch fishing. Here’s his report:
“A perfect method for perch is to slowly troll around with small to medium size woblers. I have done some excellent catches on our Kinetic Ultra Zig Zag 110 mm – a medium size wobbler I use for targeting bigger perch. I use a simple paternoster rig with a long leader and a heavy weight to troll the woblers near the bottom or a bit up in the watercolumn in depths of 8 to 15 meters. This method will cover large areas and when you find the fish it can be extremely entertaining. An entertaining day was exactly what I had on a large Danish water called Esrum Lake. In the southern part of the lake I had several smaller fish, so I decided to try the northern part for some bigger fish. Here I succeeded in catching half a dozen really nice fish. The three biggest were 1.2 – 1.46 and 1.61 kilos, and all of them were released after a few photos”.

126 cm pike – A little to hungry

A report from Kinetic test team member Jess Glargaard tells of a remarkable, but far from perfect day:
“The first thing I saw on my first pikefishing trip this fall was quite shocking. Close to the shore a huge pike was lying dead in the surface and there was no doubt that this was one of the bigger fish in the water. The pikes in this water are usually slim, but this fish seemed quite fat. I was curious and went closer to find out if it was dead of old age or something else. As I got a closer look I could see the tail of a smaller pike hanging out of the mouth. The big one had obviously suffocated as it was trying to swallow its prey. The smell was horrible, but I managed to get both fish up on the bank. The length of the big one was 126 cm and the length of the pike it was trying to swallow was 98 cm. This emphasizes the fact that huge pikes sometimes goes for the biggest prey. An impressive experience, but it was also quite sad to see a big fish dead in my favorite water. It will be missed!”

Ole Jørgensen Design & Boss lures

New cooperation with tackle designer Ole Jørgensen
Kinetic / Fairpoint Outdoors are proud to announce the cooperation with tackle designer Ole Jørgensen, based in Bogense, Denmark. The company has signed a deal with Ole and will start distributing his famed seatrout lure Boss in all of Scandinavia within the next couple of weeks. Luxury equipment like nets, gaffs and wading staffs will follow and be part of the 2011 product range.

Ole started producing tackle back in 1986, as the Boss lure was intended to be part of a graduation project. In many anglers opinion this lure scored an A+ and has been a favorite ever since.

Later on – in 1990 – he started designing and producing luxury tools like gaffs, nets etc. They soon became popular and as with everything Ole produces they were considered as “state of the art” tools since the beginning.

Ole is looking forward to the cooperation with Fairpoint Outdoors – the company distributing brands like Kinetic, Rio, Hardy etc. in all of Scandinavia: “So far my products are only known to a very small proportion of the Scandinavian marked. With a wider distribution I hope they will be just as valued and appreciated in the rest of Scandinavia”.

The Boss is back
Boss has proved its worth by catching seatrout’s up to 9.5 kilo from the shore in southern Scandinavia as well as several lake trouts in the northern parts of Scandinavia. The colors are a mix of all time favorites and some new hot trout colors. Actually white lures have been very popular for many years and on the famous Danish seatrout island Fyn you will have a hard time finding a sea trout angler without a lot of white lures in his box. Synchronized attacks and excellent sea trout fishing

In the middle of September the sea trout season in southern Sweden and the Swedish part of Oresund ends. During the last weeks of the season product developer at Kinetic – Elias Narvelo – had some a couple excellent trips.

His first trip was an evening trip to the Oresund coast together with Alexander Wiklund. They were both using the “Sømmet” in-line lure in the colors “Sinking Wedding” and “Mad Tobis”. At one point their lures hit the water at the exact same time and it seemed like two larger trouts had synchronized their attacks, because both Elias and Alexander were yelling: “Fish on!” at the same time. The biggest of the trout’s was lost soon after, but Alexander managed to land his fish. In total the two of them had 4 trout’s up to 2.6 and 2.7 kilos.

A week later, Elias went trout hunting again. And once again he used “Sømmet” to nail a
beautiful trout weighing 3.3 kilo.

Huge sea bass on Magic Minnow Lure

In both Denmark and Norway September is one of the best months for targeting big sea bass. In Denmark the fishing takes place near the piers and smaller reefs on the west coast and usually calm eastern winds offers the best conditions.
In the beginning of this month the conditions were finally perfect and Danish sea bass expert Erik Simonsen from the shop Grej Online as well as several of his friends have been fishing like crazy, trying to catch a big one.
One of the best lures for big Danish sea bass is Magic Minnow, Brøndum, 27 g, and this was exactly the lure Eriks friend Anders Leth was using last Monday, when he went fishing with his brother in law, near Hirtshals in the northwestern part of the country. After 3 hours of fishing a huge sea bass took the Brøndum lure and for the next 10 minutes Anders was busy using all his skills while fighting the fish.
By Danish measures this fish was a giant. Only a handful of Danish sea bass over 3 kilos have been caught through times and this fish became part of the exclusive club by pushing the scale to 3.3 kilos.
Erik Simonsen from Grej Online tells that in general the fishing has been good lately. The 3.3 kilos fish is the biggest so far, but several fish around 1-1.5 kilos and an excellent fish on 2.5 kilos have also been caught.

Seatrout’s and boatfishing bonanza

Right now the seatrout fishing is really picking up in both Denmark and Sweden. In the Swedish part of Øresund it is about time because the season stops on the 15th of September.

Fredrik Lundblad is taking care of the Fairpoint Outdoors / Kinetic sales in the southern half of Sweden and he sure knows how to localize and catch those tricky trout’s. This weekend he went boatfishing a couple of times in the northern part of Øresund.

The first trip was in the middle of the night freday evening. Fredrik invited his friend Cristian Ekvald on his second fishingtrip ever and took the boat to a shallow, sandy area where the fish hunt for sand eels. The two of them were casting 24 g Sølvpilen in “Sinking Wedding” and “Sea Bass” colors, and they managed to land 8 or 9 smaller cods and 3 trout’s in a couple of hours. The biggest seatrout was 60 cm and three other trouts were lost.

The following Sunday Fredrik was back on the water early in the morning between 5 and 7 o’clock. This time he was accompanied by Mårten Dahlquist from the shop Sportsfiskedepån, and as soon as their Sølvpil lures hit the water the fish were there. The total result of this boatfishing bonanza was 7 trout’s over 50 cm. The biggest was 65 cm and a little more than 3 kilos.

On his second fishing trip ever Cristian Ekvald
caught these trout’s on Sølvpilen in the middle of the night.

What a beautiful fish!

Last week Kinetic test team member and fish biology expert Henrik Carl had planned a sight fishing trip targeting some huge grass carps. Unfortunately rain showers destroyed the chances of sighting those big fish and instead Henrik drove to a small lake in the north eastern part of Denmark. Despite the dark clouds Henrik had no problem spotting a quite unique fish – an almost red glowing golden orfe – swimming near the surface in a small open area in the middle of the weed.

A bit of paste was served on a hook 10 cm bellow a small controller using a Fluoroflex leader. The golden orfe paid attention to it right away, but before it could take the bait a rudd came out of nowhere. Henrik managed to pull the paste away from the rudd without spooking the orfe, just to see another small rudd trying to engulf the paste. Once again he managed to carefully pull the paste away, and once again the orfe went for the bait. This time the red beauty was the fastest. During the fight the fish got snaked in the weed, but Henrik managed to get it loose and finally land it. The measures were 51 cm and 1.55 kg – maybe not the biggest orfe, but definitely the most beautiful one we have seen.

Superb seatrout nailed on “the Nail”

In the southeastern part of Denmark the seatrout fishing along the coast is as good as it gets. Right now the fish are hunting sand eels like crazy.

One of the best lures for this type of fishing is the Danish inline lure “Sømmet”. Translated to English the name Sømmet means “the Nail”. This is one of the all time favorites among hardcore seatroutanglers, but Kinetic is the first company to make a in line version of the original lure. This is of course only possible by paying a royalty to the inventor of the lure, Henry Hansen.

Last week these lures finally came in stock and they soon proved their worth. April 25th Kinetics graphic designer, Jess Glargaard, spend his day off casting against the wind and struggling against the waves. It was definitely worth the effort, when a large seatrout nailed the nail at the end of a long upwind cast. After several jumps and long runs the fish finally had to surrender and Jess was able to bring a silver rocket weighing 5.25 kilo to the shore. The fish was full of sandeels and probably in the middle of a feeding frenzy when it attacked “Sømmet” a lure designed to combine extreme castability and a swimming pattern imitating sandeel.

Magic Minnow Sømmet is available in 8 different colors and 3 sizes: 16, 22 and 28 g.

Norwegian pike bonanza

From the two Danish pikeanglers Bjarne Nielsen and Lars Soefort we have received a report from a three days visit to a Norwegian lake during the middle of may. During these three days the pikes were acting weird, but as soon as Bjarne and Lars found the right lures and colors the pikefishing turned into a regular bonanza. Together the two of them caught 17 pikes over 8 kilos. 12 of these were over 9 kilos and the biggest took the scale to 11.1 kilo. The 170 mm Westin Jätte was by far the best lure and the majority of the big predators were caught two different colors: “Streaky the perch” and “Strider”.

For big fish in shallow water

As the water gets colder the big, fat autumn pikes moves into the shallow areas. Especially in brackish water you will sometimes find the biggest pikes in surprisingly shallow water. This is exactly the kind of fishing this year’s new Westin Jätte Shallow Runner is made for. For a couple of seasons a few Scandinavian pike specialists have been catching impressive numbers of pikes over 10 kilos by cutting down the lip on some of their old Westin lures. This way, the popular wobbler with its unique slow, rolling movement could be fished in very shallow water.

With the new shallow running Westin wobler we have made it easy for everyone to fish those shallow water hot-spots. It has already proven it’s worth by catching several huge pikes.

Westin Jätte Shallow Runner is available in 15 different colors. All wobblers are 17 cm/40 g/Floating.

UV coated spinner

Spinners like Original Rooster Tail and Vibric Rooster Tail are already known as some of the most effective spinners of all-time. This year a new member of the same family is introduced to fishermen all over Scandinavia. Rooster Tail Lite spinners have the same enticing pulsating hackle as the Original Rooster Tail, but this spinner features an Indian style spinner blade with an ultraviolet coating to create the ultimate fish-attracting action. Unlike humans fish are able to see the UV coating used on these spinners and you can count on them noticing it - quickly!
The unique, compact, tear drop shaped body prevents the line from twisting and makes the spinner cast further than most. As with all Rooster Tail spinners, the innovative Rooster Tail Lite is deadly for all kinds of fish in virtually all condition. Here at Kinetic we have had great success using it for both wild trout and perch of all sizes.

Available in 7.09 g / 10.77 g and 8 different colors. (Not for sale in Denmark).

Huge icelandic salmon

Last year Kinetic test team member David Thormar landed one of the biggest salmon caught during 2009. This year he has done it again…

Thursday the 24th of June he was using his beloved Hardy Demon single handed rod to fish for trout in Laxa in Adaldal – when a huge Icelandic salmon took his fly. Against all odds he managed to land the beast and after a fast weigh-, measure-, and photo- session, it was released back into Laxa.

By Icelandic standards it was a gigantic 12 kilo fish measuring 103 centimeters. So far this is the biggest salmon caught on Iceland this year…

The night fishing season is starting up

So far it has been a fantastic seatrout season for our test team member David Thormar. The fishing this spring peaked in the end of April in the southeastern parts of Denmark, where David used our in-line lure “Sømmet” to catch a lot of big trout’s. He had several good days, and during just one of these days he managed to land an impressive number of 19 trout’s. 4 of these fish crossed the 3 kilo mark and the two biggest where 4.0 and 4.8 kilo. All of them where caught using the “Mad Tobis” color.

David Thormar – 4.0 kilo

     Andreas Aggerlund – 3.0 kilo

During the last weeks, the fishing has been slow, but now as we enter June, the night fishing season is slowly starting up. Some people fish for a full night, but most people start in the afternoon and fish a couple of hours into the dark. Last week David was fishing together with two friends, and in the dark a prototype of the new Magic Minnow lure “Kongetobis” was tested. It worked and David’s friend Andreas Aggerlund had the biggest fish – a 3 kilo beauty caught on a 27 g version in the colour “Night Watch”.

Only a couple of days later a 6.1 kilo fish was caught in the same area, and hopefully even bigger fish will be caught during the next weeks. The water temperatures are still rather cold, but some nights you will see the trout’s hunting in the surface or jumping out of the water, while other nights are really slow.

Danish spring salmon - A real cannibal

Not all salmon stop feeding, when they enter freshwater. Kinetics Marketing Coordinator Peter Kirkby had a solid proof of this, when he was fishing for springers in the west part of Denmark.
Peter was fishing in River Storåen, near Holstebro in Denmark on april 25th, when he caught his first salmon of the year. The fish was a real chrome beauty measuring 90 cm and weighing 7,7 kilo and it was caught on a 14 g Black/Copper Rooster Tail Spinner fished near the bottom a little upstream a sharp turn on the small river.

The most remarkable thing about this catch is the fact that this salmon was still eating after it entered the river. A limited catch quota is allowed on this river, so this salmon was kept for eating. The stomach of the fish was still full functional, and nothing less than 5 smaller salmon measuring approximately 15 cm had been swallowed by this cannibal salmon during the last days. This certainly makes one wonder if any lure or fly can be to big…

Tricky “Dollies”

Marketing coordinator Peter Kirkby from Kinetic have just returned from a floattrip in Alaska where he had the chance to test several rods and reels from Kinetic and Hardy along with some of the Rio flylines:
–- We were 8 guys fishing together with Getaway Tours on the Talachulitna Creek and River. It’s my third visit to the river and every time is a new experience. We usually start the trip where a small creek enters a lake in the upper part of the system and this year was no exception. Right here we fish for Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma malma) – a trout closely related to the arctic char and found in most of Alaska. The first couple of fish usually attack more or less anything before getting tricky. This year the “Dollies” were extremely tricky from the very beginning. At the mouth of the small creek we could see several fish, but they seemed impossible to catch. The small creek change every year during spring runoff when the ice breaks and the snow melts. This year only one deeper pool was found near the outlet and it was more or less blocked by a small tree and washed out bushes. Still I had to give it a try. Using a weighted nymph and the new RIO Dart WF4 F/S3 only found on the Scandinavian marked I was able to achieve the right presentation exactly on the back side of the snag.
A nice size dolly shook its head twice before bolting of like a bonefish. It went full speed downstream and in the shallow part of the outlet it zigzagged between the legs of my fellow fishermen before entering the deeper parts of the lake. It was finally measured and released: 54 centimeters and a lot of fun on a light Hardy Marksman rod.
This fish was just the beginning and by fishing deep with small nymphs or using a fast presentation of small streamers on the edge of shallow water at the outlet we caught several nice fish from 40-54 centimeters. Peter ends his report by adding:
- I caught 20 dollies that evening, using the RIO Dart line. The line is designed and perfected for Scandinavian brown- and seatrout- and single hand salmonfishing, but it was a pleasure to see that it can also make a big difference “over there”.

Five kilo seatrout on Great Heron

After a hot summer the water temperatures in the coastal areas surrounding Denmark are starting to drop. A lot of the seatrouts that have been feeding in deeper water now start moving towards streams and rivers or start feeding higher in the water column.

Last Saturday Peter Kirkby from Kinetic went trolling with a good friend Jimmi Olsen near the beautiful coastline of south eastern Denmark. In the evening – after catching several cods – they found the trout’s in depths from 15 to 20 feet.

Even though the new Magic Minnow Great Heron is made as a casting lure a few of them were tried along with the traditional trolling lures. Both the cods and the sea trout’s seemed to like them, and out of 3 trout’s both the smallest and the biggest took a Great Heron. Peter caught the biggest fish – a pure beauty with an impressive weight of 5.3 kilo. This fish was caught on a 22 g GH in the color Smallpox. Jimmi’s biggest fish was a superb fighting 2.7 kilo trout caught on a conventional trolling lure.

162 kilo halibut on Giant Baithead

The Giant Baithead is a jighead designed to mount a deadbait in a simple and fast manner, making it possible to fish exactly like you would do with a normal shadjig. At the seafishing camp “Torsvåg Havsfiske” fishing with a combination of a small coalfish served on a Giant Baithead is considered one of the deadliest methods for huge halibuts. The Camp is situated on the small island Koja branching off the main Island Vannøy and several huge “barren doors” have been caught in this area. This includes a 194 kilo monster caught by campguide Stefan Lühring in 2008 on a Giant Jighead.

This year the halibut season was kicked off April 8th, when Stefan took his Dutch clients halibut fishing. The morning was slow, but as the current picked up during the day the halibuts started biting. The first bite was a small one, but soon after Stefan was able to catch and release an impressive halibut estimated around 65 kilos.

To most anglers a 65 kilo halibut could be the fish of a lifetime, but the memories of this fish soon faded compared to what happened next. Harry Verhagen from Holland was fishing near the bottom 50 meters below the boat, when he felt a bite and hooked a fish on his Giant Baithead. Soon he was in for the fight of his life. For two hours he was fighting like hell before another Torsvåg monster was finally in the boat. The weight of this huge halibut was 162.7 kilo. It measured 230 cm in length.

As far as we know here at Kinetic it is the biggest halibut ever caught on a Giant Baithead. What a way to start the season!

Big trout’s in shallow water

Kinetic test team member David Thormar and his father Einar have been quite successful while hunting big Danish seatrouts in shallow water areas of eastern Sjælland. Their last adventure was an afternoon trip to one of those shallow water areas, where the big fish go to hunt. One of the biggest problems when fishing these areas is to find a longcasting lure with the perfect balance and action to fish near the surface without getting stuck in seaweed. The new Magic Minnow Djurswobler proved to be the perfect weapon.
This afternoon a beautiful 4.1 kg trout couldn’t stand the temptation of the “Live Fish” colored Djurswobler. Einar caught this fish while he was standing on a rock casting a little towards the shore. Several other fish was caught during the evening, and in total David and Einar had 5 fish each. Einars 4.1 kg fish was the biggest, but he had an even bigger fish following the lure all the way to the tip of the rod. The biggest trout’s caught by David was 2.6 and 3.75 kg.

Salmon catching family

Right now and for the next couple of weeks salmonfishing for big silver plated springers in the Danish rivers is hot – perhaps the hottest salmonfishing you will find anywhere in the world at this time of year. Still there’s an old Danish saying telling that for every springer you catch, you should expect to wear out a pair of rubber boots.
Luckily Michael Ejstrup Nielsen was a little faster than that, when he decided to test his new Viva V7 LTX reel.
Michael and his family seem to know exactly how to catch salmon. Last week Michael’s uncle Niels Ejstrup Sørensen, who lives on the Faroe Islands, was visiting the other uncle Flemming. They went salmonfishing and both of them were successful. Flemming had a 7.2 kg fish and Niels could bring back a 8.2 kg springer.

Inspired by their catches Michael went to the river Storåen. Michael was fishing next to a snag in the river, when a salmon took his spinner and made a run for cover. The fight offered all the excitement, acrobatics and action needed to test the break to the limit. Several times the line was caught around some wooden poles in the river, but finally Michael managed to force it away from the dangerous snags and with assistance from his friend Tim, he could land the beauty – a perfectly shaped springer measuring 89 cm and 8.35 kg.

Gigantic Cod

39.4 kilo cod caught on Giant Jighead from Kinetic??Kinetic test team member and freelance writer Jakob Lindberg has spent more weeks than any other Danish angler at Sørøya in northern Norway in search of the area's legendary big cod. This year the fishing was better than ever before, so when Jakob at the end of March had a chance to get off to Nordic Sea Angling’s camp there was no way around it. The trip was planned in haste and the first 1 1/2 days Jakob fished alone until fish mate Filip Faurholm joined. Together the two experienced an unbelievable fishingadventure targeting the so-called skrei – a strain of cod, which migrates from the Barents Sea to northern Norway to spawn. ?In total they caught 22 cod over 20 kilos. April 1st the fishing went absolutely berserk when Philip landed a cod of 32.2 kg and Jakob got to test his Kinetic Godspeed 20-30 lbs rod with a cod of 36.1 kg. Both fish were caught on the heaviest model Giant Jighead from Kinetic. ?Few would have thought that this catch could be surpassed, but already April 3rd a huge cod inhaled the Giant Jighead Filip was using. Filip had to put all his strength into his Greys Siege rod before he managed to land an extremely thick cod of 130 cm length. There was no doubt, that this was the heaviest cod caught during the trip, so immediately the two anglers sailed the harbor to get the exact weight of the fish. Soon it was clear to both of them that the European record of 37.52 kg was passed with a solid margin, as the fish weighed 39.4 kg. ?Filips fish will apply for a new European record, but it might not be a long-lived record. Already the day after a cod of 41 kg was caught by German Manfred Müller, who sailed from Skjervøy Seafishingcamp and fished in Olderfjorden. Whether this catch will apply for a European record is not yet known.

This gigantic cod balanced the scale at 39.4 kg. It was caught by Danish angler Filip Faurholm on a Giant Jighead from Kinetic.

Kinetic test team member Jakob Lindberg is a regular freelance writer for the Danish magazine “fiske-feber” in which a story on his and Filip's experiences can be read in the next issue. ?Already in the current editions of the Danish magazine “Fisk & Fri” and Swedish “fiske-feber” you will find an interesting article on this year's insane cod fishing. Jimmy Andersson, who runs Nordic Sea Angling, has written a story on the beginning of this year’s “skrei adventure”. ?

Huge Pike before season closure

Here in Denmark the ice have been covering our lakes for a very long period – a tough challenge for the pike population in many small waters. The fish have simply died from lack of oxygen under the ice. ?Fortunately, there are still smaller waters, where the "old warriors" have survived. Kinetics graphic designer Jess Glargaard had a weighty proof of this a few days before season closure: ?"In the days leading up to Easter, I drove around to check the situation in the various small waters. My hope was, that a few pikes had survived in some of the smaller waters, so I brought along a 8 foot Kinetic Power Cast and Viva Galatea 3000F and a handful Westin wobblers. ?In Denmark the season is closed from April 1st until May 1st but earlier during the now closed season I've had great results with Westin Jätte 170 mm Westin Jätte Shallow Runner 170 mm - two compact wobblers with good casting abilities.?Wobblers are usually one of the best tactics in early spring, where the pikes at times can be weird and hard to hooks on baitfish. This spring was no exception, and there were both long periods where the pikes were on the bite and periods where almost nothing happened.?With the new Westin Jätte Shallow Runner tied to the leader, I was able to fish in the shallow areas. Nothing beats the excitement of having the Shallow Runner working 15 cm below the surface when a huge wave from a big pike approaches the lure. However, it was the classic Westin Jätte in color pattern “The Biscuit” that accounted for the largest fish on my trips. At the end of a long cast I only took 5 turns on the handle before an old pike responded to the Westin lure. 11.2 kg was the weight of this old warrior. My camera was ready on a tripod, and after a few photos I could release this big pike back into the water.”
